24 ALS, 15 written by W. R. Thomas to his father Chauncey, from 1866 to 1879, describing his work, Colorado and his family, in addition to commenting on relations in the West and in Pennsylvania. He describes his work of visiting mines and writing them up while editor of the Miner's Register, his visits to see the railroad, the never-ending work as an editor of the Rocky Mountain News. With 7 ALS written to Steve J. Gardner, largely about estate matters. With 2 letters written to Chauncey Thomas by William N. Byers and M. Byers about W. R. Thomas' progress in Colorado. Accompanied by 3 mining items: one statement of account from the Dickinson Stubtail Mine Co. to Clark and Simmons, dated Mar 1, 1886, signed by John Eatwell, an inventory of an unnamed mine, and a blank form headed "Daily Report of the Dickinson Stubtail Mine."

W. R. Thomas was assistant editor of the Daily Miners' Register in Central City, Colorado Territory from 1866-1867, and of the Rocky Mountain News in Denver from 1867 to the mid 1870s. He apparently had an argument with another editor of the paper, William N. Byers, and left the paper. He worked in the Adjutant General's Office in Colorado starting in 1872, ranched in Littleton, Colorado for a few years in the 1880s and moved back to Denver in 1885. Steve J. William Byers was a Colorado pioneer, surveyor, and newspaper editor. Founder of the Rocky Mountain News. Built the first telegraph line from Denver, Colo. to New Mexico.
